I am trying a new finishing scedule for a Teak Patio set

I have had a high quality Teak Patio set for about 20 years. I have had it refinished twice. The first time it cost me about $750. The second time I had a boat refinisher do it for a $1000. This time I am doing it personally. The first finish was lacquer, the second was poly. Both were ok for a couple of years, but the cracked silver of aging teak broke through in both cases. This time I am going to use a Sam Maloof poly oil treatment. First off, I am using McCloskeys marine finish thinned with blo and mineral spirits.
Now, I like teak, but it is too orange yellow for my liking. I am doing a total of 7 coats with Watco medium brown on coats 2 and 3. The darkening effect has toned down the colors of bright teak to a warmer reddish brown. After stripping I sanded to 360 with abralon to get more of a burnished smoothness to the wood. Wow, it is turning out to be gorgeous. I will post pics when I am done.

Thank you Jason. I figure it will probably a lot easier to maintain this way. I may use Howards Sun wax with uv protect it.

THAT is what teak is supposed to look like! I hope it holds up well. I will say that setting in direct sunlight is tough on any finish.

Thank you both.. I did it this eay so maintenance would be easier. UV wax on a regular basis, and/or light sanding and another coat of poly oil.

Looks great Wiz. I'm gonna file this one away for a future need.
