    burl egg containers

My mother's 71st birthday is Thursday so I made her a box elder burl egg box/container, this was the last of the burl I had that had any red/pink in it. I had to put the wood in cactus juice to stabilize it as some of it had a lot of bark inclusions and was a little on the punky side.

I glued some ash blocks on the ends of the burl so as to get as much of the burl as possible, made the eggs a bit larger than I had originally intended but I think they look okay?

First pic without flash second with flash. The egg in the middle was the first one I did before deciding to glue blocks to the ends of the burl. I also made my mother the carved cherry egg with the gem stones and wanted to give it to her inside the egg box and that first one was to small (I also screwed up on that one and glued the hinge on upside down, the bow is wrong).

I sprayed them all with 3 coats of rattle can semi gloss lacquer inside and out, let them dry over night and then sanded the outsides and sprayed with automotive urethane clearcoat.

I got the brass hinges from woodturners catalog they required the center of the eggs be 2-1/16" and the egg stands from Pennstate.

The left overs will be Christmas gifts for family.

What do you think of them?

    Thanks ~Mike
