    Re: Building my 2nd Guitar

I've been playing with a few sketchup plugins - some pretty neat stuff - one called "Extrude Tools" which offers several neat ways of getting organic shapes out of it. Another one called Curviloft which basically generates a mesh from a series of splines.

So far, though, they haven't been able to handle the full profile and doing it up in segments leaves steps. Ideally, I'd like to be able to model it first, because I still have to do the compensation for the thickness of my plies, too.

I've had a few generous offers to do it for me in things like Rhino CAD but i need to be able to do this myself - preferably without having to spend a pile of cash ... these sketchup plugins seem to be getting me very close, but unless I can simplify things some, they take a very long time or don't work on the entire model.

More to come ... here's how close i got last night:

Left you a message in chat, but will leave this here too. Some dxf files I came across...

See the second page of this thread for some thickness measurements if you still need them...

All the challenging thing are starting to become non-issues. I like when that happens.

Can't wait to see the video - but you REALLY need to include a LOT more detail

How did you solve the issue with creating the model

What did you program the shape with

    Re: Building my 2nd Guitar

    Was it a successful test?

    YES - you learned something.

    Love watching this guitar build.

BUT - you still didn't answer my questions.

Oh - I don't like drilling on the machine either.

Doing something like a helical plunge with an end mill works better.

Drilling at high RPMs, and the lack of rigidity is a show stopper.

The drill chatters way to much to be effective.

Stubby drills work a little better.

    These ones?

I coulda swore i mentioned it was all sketchup for the modelling ... and didn't do very well. It wouldn't work if it wasn't a bending form.

Way too wonky - hard to describe - the calculations it did to try to connect the topographical sections together got a little weird over in the tighter bends near the ears.

I've attached the STL file I generated the gcode from - exported from sketchup. See if you can see that weird patch of .. i dunno what to call it ... it ended up as slight ridges, and won't really be a problem since it's just a bending form

Overall, it was plenty good enough for the task, but I wouldn't want to have to do that for anything showy, ya know?
