Had to trim it with the chainsaw once I had it on the lathe... just enough so I could spin it.

Got it roughed to a little over an inch thick, packed it into a paper bag with it's own shavings and we will see in a few months...

I did a few real close up - cause this is what I will NEED to be able to do.
...

As the title implies, it is time to fess up -- I have not been using a splitter on my TS for an extended time; longer than I care to admit.

Several years ago I bought one of those micro-splitters with the intention of installing it soon after the purchase. However, having an after market zero clearance insert made out of aluminum I wasn't exactly sure how I would install it. So, I never got 'round toit'.

After talking to people about the micro-splitter during a chat session the other night I decided not to use it. People experienced the splitter being pulled out of the insert during the rip operation; the wood pinched it to the point of pulling it out. I thought this was just as dangerous as not having a splitter installed.

Events of the past week told me it was time to make one. During one of our (the wife and I) nightly walks I found a 1/8" X 1 1/4" x 36" piece of aluminum laying on the shoulder of the road. Evidently someone lost it off their vehicle -- still had the bar code on it. This morning I watched a woodworking video over the internet where the light bulb came on. The presenter had made a splitter out of aluminum! Do ya think someone was trying to tell me something? It took just an hour to make mine and here it is.

Now I can breathe a little easier the next time I need to rip.

I appoligize for being so verbose.

Been a slacker lately, but I decided to burn a few days of vacation time and get some stuff cleaned up, moved, or burned(whichever is more fun)....

Been a slacker lately, but I decided to burn a few days of vacation time and get some stuff cleaned up, moved, or burned(whichever is more fun). Okay....I was supposed to be cleaning up the pop-up camper so it can be used in a few weeks....but sawmillin' is a disease, and I had to have a 'fix'!!!!

Rolled this 1975pounder(Sweetgum/Redgum)(yup, there's an APP for that on my iPhone) onto the sawmill bunk by hand and took a pass to get rid of some of the 'nasty' on the top....yup, it went into the burn barrel. Removed some bark, and used a water hose under pressure to try to clean the outside of the log a little(get as much dirt off as possible). I really need to invest in a bark spud.......Father's Day is coming ain't it?

Then I remember....no camera! So in the house I went.

Click!

And click again!

Now if anyone ever asks....yes, she can take a full bite out of a semi-dry log that measures just under 21 inches across. There is a slight bend in the log and I needed to make a quick adjustment via Stihl!!!

This blade was dull when I started, but I really had not planned on doing anything other then some clean-up.

Close-up!

Different angle!

Now if you look closely at this photo, you'll notice a 'line' in the log, just above the pith. I made a pass with the blade set at 6-1/8" deep(just above the pith), and I have decided these will all be 10"diameter x 6"thickness bowl blanks!

Close-up after the 6" thick slab was removed? Sure, it is wood porn time!!!

Well, it's too hot for this young fella, after all it's vacation-not work time! Just before BSea took me to lunch in town, he made a pass on the under side of the pith....yielded a 1-3/4thick slab. Hopefully it'll be gone before the weekend is through?

The bottom chunk will get flipped over tomorrow(when it's cooler), and I'll make one more pass to get me some 5-1/2" thickness x 10" diameter bowl blanks.

Why that size? Ah, a 5-gallon buck is 10" round on the inside! I can rough turn them and do a DNA soak inside the 5-gallon buck!!!

Scott (thanks for looking....CODY, I know you did) B

The cast coffee beans are a real pain to work with and required stabilizing and filling with CA glue, but using coffee beans for the coffee scoop seemed like a good idea (and Ms Penny told me make a coffee scoop using coffee beans. I always do what Ms Penny tells me to do...it just might take me a while :D)
